John brings extensive expertise in establishing and leading university support services, commercial subsidiaries, and cross-departmental change management programmes. With over four decades of experience in estates, facilities, commercial operations, and strategic development, he has an in-depth understanding of university estates across the UK, national planning and infrastructure policy, student residential investment companies, and university partnership agreements.
As a former member of the Universities UK (UUK) Student Residential Compliance Oversight Board, John can provide SUMS members with practical advice and strategic support on estates, commercial development, student accommodation, infrastructure funding, investment strategies, and organisational change. Following his attendance at UK REIIF 2026, he has current insight into infrastructure funding, finance markets, university investment zones, and science park development.
How has John recently supported universities?
- BcUs new residential Joint venture portfolio – Established the facilities management and allocation strategy 3000 beds. Made improvements to fire safety management in partnership with investors across the city
- Steamhouse/Birmingham IZ – Acquisitions and construction commercial building, education estates project of the year 2022. Completed on time through the covid period. Formed the anchor to establish investment zone and became the headquarters for CISCOs UK regional operations
- Merger Estates and commercial services – Change management by merging separate departments into the largest University support department. Service delivery model, program of continuous improvement
- Royal Birmingham Conservatoire – Oversaw the relocation of the RBC orchestra to its new building. Established new service provision/licence for the management of live events.
Outside of work, John has three main pastimes; golf, boating (with a small boat where he sails out of Porthmadog Yacht Club), and is also an understudy Drummer for an established Elvis impersonation act.
