Fiona‘s knowledge and skills are invaluable in supporting SUMS’ members and clients, her significant experience in supporting equality, diversity and inclusion includes whole organisation reviews and targeted work looking at specific services, policies, provision and practice. Engaging with staff and student groups, she gathers consultation insight to build on effective practice and to support development of provision to ensure inclusivity.

An experienced trainer and facilitator, Fiona delivers a suite of programmes, from management and leadership topics and bespoke programmes in the EDI space to build knowledge and confidence to support colleagues and students effectively, ensuring compliance with legal and sector expectations.

Fiona was a Divisional Head of HR at Leicester University for many years, a role spanning EDI, Staff Wellbeing and L&D. Prior to this she worked in Student Support Services. Fiona spent a period in International HR before refocusing on HE and public sector work as a consultant and training provider. Her work includes review of staff/student/stakeholder journey, with a particular interest in advancing diversity and supporting wellbeing and dignity through effective policies, processes and skill development. Fiona has led in scale projects and roll outs in HE, public sector and for other high-profile clients.

How has Fiona recently supported universities?

  • South West Bio DPP (Bristol university): working on a number of BBSRC funded projects to support the EDI review of the Doctoral Training Programme journey for different student groups, including targeted work around the development of a national network for students identifying as from Black and Minoritised Ethnic backgrounds
  • University of the West of Scotland: working with internal team to support their preparation and application for institutional Athena Swan submission
  • Queen Mary University of London: institutional mapping against the Student Minds Mental Health Charter destinations
  • Kingston University: whole institution disability support provision project.

Outside of professional work, Fiona enjoys walking and swimming. She is an avid reader and a member of a highly competitive local quiz team.
