Paul was an extraordinary professional whose expertise in Employee Relations, Organisation Development, Transformation, and Change profoundly influenced the UK education sector and beyond. He dedicated over 20 years of his career to shaping innovative workforce strategies, driving cultural transformation, and fostering organisational excellence.
Paul held significant leadership roles, including Chief People and Culture Officer at the University of Leeds, and Executive People and OD Director at Lancaster University. During his tenure at Lancaster, Paul was instrumental in developing the university’s People and Culture strategies, which contributed to its recognition as University of the Year, sustained top-10 league table rankings, and growing international profile. He played a critical role in establishing Lancaster’s global campuses in China, Ghana, and Germany, further expanding the university’s impact.
Paul’s achievements extended beyond higher education. He led transformational programmes in the NHS and local government, including the merger of three UK universities, and the NHS workforce transformation in the East Midlands. His strategic vision and collaborative leadership set a benchmark for excellence.
Paul’s influence reached national levels through his tenure as Chair of Universities Human Resources (UHR) and his service on numerous committees, including the national pay negotiation board and USS employers’ pensions group. Recognised as one of HR Magazine’s top 20 HR influencers in 2022, Paul was a Companion of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD), a distinction awarded to few.
As an executive coach and mentor, Paul dedicated himself to nurturing future HR leaders. His passion for developing others was matched by his warmth, integrity, and wisdom.
