DOWNLOAD THE TOOLKIT HERE
Developed by the SUMS Change Community of Practice with the collective experience of change practitioners across our member universities, this document sets out practical change and wellbeing do’s and don’ts. The toolkit includes:
- leadership principles
- anonymised case studies
- simple tools to help leaders, managers and change teams to plan and deliver change that protects people as well as institutional objectives
Why is this important?
Change has become a constant across the sector and the human impact is real – burnout, anxiety and breakdowns in trust are recurring consequences when change is poorly led. This toolkit focuses on the everyday choices leaders make – what they say, what they do and what they choose not to address – and shows how those choices shape psychological safety and team resilience.
How to use the toolkit
If you lead change, use this toolkit to prompt honest conversations about risk, context and capacity, and to model the clearer, kinder leadership behaviours that help people and institutions adapt successfully.
- Dip into the short, practical sections that match your role and context
- Use the green do’s for immediate actions
- Learn from the red don’ts to avoid common pitfalls
Apply the case studies and principles when planning programmes, communications and stakeholder engagement.
The toolkit is designed for easy sharing with senior teams, HR, communications and Faculty/Professional Service leads, and to be embedded early in programme/project planning to keep wellbeing visible throughout implementation.
